You are so awesome
It took me a long time to realize that flattery works not because we believe it, but because we're tickled that someone would take the trouble.
Recently I noticed that some guy named Ralph Waldo Emerson already explained this to the world a long time ago, as quoted in AWAD:
We love flattery, even though we are not deceived by it, because it shows that we are of importance enough to be courted.

excellent! and as we replay it in our minds over and over, in little ways we might even come to believe it. and then someday it might even be true.
it seems to me that not only flattery "flatters" us, but almost any attention (like teasing) that is paid to us does as well -- shy of violence or something like that. at least that's what *someone* told me once (and i agree)...
dobwuu -- my word verification -- they should use this for "W" instead of "dubya"!
yes.
sigh... not many people have gone to the trouble today, though.
(if anyone flatters me now, i will deem it insincere. tomorrow's another issue)
I'll wait until tomorrow then...don't expect anything nice from me today.
Interesting. I guess I'm one of the few people who get flattered because I'm so wonderful people just can't help telling the truth about me. :)
I agree....
also, re a recent conversation, is a "suck-up" a more obvious flatterer? :-)
guess what? i was told that i'm a "favorite" client of somebody's -- without prodding! i am keeping in mind that the effort in telling me (especially without being prompted) should be worth points; though i *do* choose to believe them. :-)
