and speaking of shootouts

Everyone remembers the 1999 Women's World Cup final -- Brandi Chastain taking off her jersey, etc, after hitting the winning shot in the shootout against China.

What I never really grasped was why so much of the attention & credit was given to Chastain. As far as I was concerned, it was Briana Scurry (the US goalkeeper) who had the hardest job and deserved the most credit -- it's far more difficult to stop a penalty shot than it is to put one in. Chastain did what she was supposed to do (except for the sports-bra demo) -- it was Scurry who came out of her body and saved the day. Or at least, that's how it seemed to me.

i bet you were worried that no one very knowledgeable about the 1999 shootout would reply. well, you can see now that your fears were unfounded, because here i am.

i, too, thought about how briana scurry didn't receive due accolades for her performance. but i remember the sports illustrated article (the one where the cover is brandi chastain exulting, minus her jersey), and it discussed scurry's performance at length, as i remember.

now for the hard facts of the matter: that still shot of blonde brandi with her shirt off sells way more issues than not-that-cute brianna scurry standing in goal.

so that's the deal with that. i'm sure there are other opinions about this, but i can't see how they would be relevant.

p.s. i realize it's possible you were already aware of all this, but i've found it's best not to overestimate you. ;)

So, what it this about--some women's hockey game or something? Wouldn't she get cold with her shirt off?

I guess Unca is really holding true to his “Things I can’t understand anyone being interested in but I’m not judging in any way those who are” mentality
